Car fire shuts down eastern distributor in Moore Park
A couple have been rescued after their Hyundai sedan caught fire just after midday today in the eastern distributor tunnel.
A Fire & Rescue logistics support vehicle was in the tunnel at the time and was first to assist the two who had escaped their stalled car.
A pregnant woman who was in the impacted vehicle was assisted by her partner and emergency services staff.
A significant NSW Ambulance, Fire & Police response was initiated with the tunnel being shut down in both directions.
A police officer and fire & rescue staff member were treated for smoke inhalation and were transported to hospital as a precaution. Both are in a good condition following their rescue efforts.
Thousands of Sydney motorists were either stuck in the tunnel or on nearby arterial roads whilst the emergency operations were underway.
The car was recovered and towed.
The vehicle is a write off and the cause of the fire remains unclear.
