Australia has farewelled its last operational Qantas 747 with a flight over Sydney.

Just after 3.10pm the Qantas aircraft took off and performed a few circuits around the harbour and coastline.

Qantas's last Boeing 747-400 final departure was via the Illawarra region where it flew over the HARS Museum where the first Qantas 747-400, VH-OJA is housed.

Its destination is Los Angeles prior to its final journey to the Mojave Desert in California. USA, where it's expected to rest after a 50 year career.

QF7474 "VH-OEJ" will be captained by Sharelle Quinn, who was the first female captain for Qantas.

Captain Sharelle Quinn has flown the aircraft for some 36 years. She said "It has been an absolute privilege".
